Rhinoplasty Overview

Reshape nose by reducing or increasing size, removing hump, changing shape of tip or bridge, narrowing span of nostrils, or changing angle between nose and upper lip. May also relieve some breathing problems. (May be covered by insurance.)

Time Required

It usually takes about 1-2 hours to perform rhinoplasty surgery. Time requirements can vary depending on the extent of surgery.

Side Effects

Rhinoplasty side effects can include bruising, swelling, and tenderness.

Risks

All surgical procedures carry a risk of infection, bleeding, and reaction to anesthesia. Specific rhinoplasty risks can include:

• Minor blood vessel bursts, resulting in redness
• Insufficient healing, requiring additional surgery
• Asymmetry
• Excessive swelling

Results Duration

Rhinoplasty results are permanent.

Recovery

Any external sutures usually will be removed about 4-6 days after surgery and internal sutures dissolve naturally

Splint or cast will be worn for about 7-10 days into the rhinoplasty recovery period

After rhinoplasty, recovery from bruising and swelling should take about 2-4 weeks (When surgery is performed to correct breathing problems, there usually won’t be visible bruising)

Nose usually takes shape nicely within about 3 months of surgery, but will develop into final result about a year or more after the procedure

After rhinoplasty, discomfort will be felt temporarily, but can be controlled with prescribed pain medication.
