Otoplasty Overview

Otoplasty is intended to reposition ears that excessively protrude from the side of the head. Appropriate for patients aged 5-6 and up, the surgery can correct the angle and size of the ears, making them more proportionate with the rest of the face and helping to boost self-image.

It usually takes somewhere between 2-3 hours to perform otoplasty surgery. Time requirements vary between situations and extent of surgery.

Side Effects

Otoplasty side effect include temporary swelling, discomfort, and bruising.

Recovery

Patients return home with a supportive wrap over the ears, and should continue to wear it for several days following surgery

It's usually about 10-20 days into the otoplasty recovery period that patients notice the results really taking shape

It is usually recommended that patients abstain from contact sports and other strenuous activity for about one month after surgery

Discomfort Level

After the otoplasty, discomfort will be felt mildly and temporarily. While it lasts, it is easily controlled with oral pain medication.

Anesthesia

The otoplasty anesthesia of choice is local with sedation. In some situations, especially when the patient is a young child, general anesthesia may be used.
