Ask the Expert

What is dizziness?
Dizziness is often used to describe two different sensations, lightheadedness and vertigo.

What causes lightheadedness?
Lightheadedness is a feeling that you are about to faint or “pass out” and usually goes away or improves when you lie down. This feeling is usually caused by a momentary drop in blood pressure and blood flow to your head, and often occurs when you get up too quickly.

Lightheadedness can happen if there is a sudden drop in blood pressure or if you are dehydrated. Dehydration is usually caused from vomiting, diarrhea, fever or other causes. Lightheadedness often accompanies the flu, common cold or allergies.

What causes vertigo?
Vertigo is a feeling that you or your surroundings are spinning when there is no actual movement and is usually caused by an inner ear problem.

There are a number of causes for vertigo. The most common cause of vertigo is injury to or disease of the inner ear. With an inner ear problem, false signals are sent to the brain indicating the inner ear detects motions, which can cause vertigo.

What can be done to help with the feeling of being dizzy?
There are several ways to combat dizziness. If the feeling persists, see your doctor.

If you are feeling Lightheaded:

  • Lay down for a few minutes
  • Gradually move to a sitting position, followed by standing

If you have vertigo:

  • Avoid lying flat on your back
  • Prop yourself up slightly
  • Move slowly to avoid the risk of falling
  • See your doctor
