What are urinary tract infections?
Your urinary tract system is important in removing wastes from the body. Any part of the system may become infected with bacteria causing a urinary tract infection.
Most urinary tract infections are bladder infections. If you do not take care of a bladder infection, it can spread to your kidneys. A kidney infection is serious and can cause permanent damage.
What causes a urinary tract infection?
The most common cause of a urinary tract infection is bacteria that enters through the urethra. Other causes include:
- Intercourse
- Waiting too long to urinate
- Pregnancy
- Menopause
- Diabetes
What are the symptoms of a urinary tract infection?
There are several symptoms of urinary tract infections.
Symptoms related to urinary tract infections include:
- Persistent urge to urinate
- Pain or burning when urinating
- Bloody or cloudy strong smelling urine
- Tender or heavy belly
- Pain on one side of your back under your ribs
- Fever and chills
- Nausea and vomiting
What types of treatments are recommended for urinary tract infections?
There are several treatments for urinary tract infections. At the first sign of a urinary tract infection, you may be able to cure it by drinking lots of water, along with cranberry juice, during the first 24 hours and urinating frequently. Also try to avoid coffee, alcohol and spicy foods, all of which irritate the bladder.
If symptoms persist more than a few days call your doctor. Oral antibiotics can treat most bladder infections and uncomplicated kidney infections successfully.
