What causes spine pain?
Causes of spine or back pain from the joints between the backbones can come from arthritis, general degenerative disease or a slipping of the backbones called spondylolisthesis.

Similar problems can also affect the joint between the pelvis and the lower part of the spine called the sacroiliac joint.

Spine pain can also be caused by degeneration or herniation of the discs. Disc herniation can result in pain from the disc itself, or the disc irritating the nerves. When the spinal canal is narrowed by disc herniation, it can pinch a nerve, which causes pain in the lower back and the legs. Disc herniation is one of the most common causes of back pain in people between the ages of 30 and 50.

Why should someone see a Pain Medicine Specialist?
If spine pain lasts long than three months, it is usually classified as chronic spine pain. This type of spine pain is often progressive and can be difficult to determine the origination.

Armed with a variety of procedures Pain Medicine specialists can often help patients with chronic back pain.

Interventional treatments done for spine pain usually serve two roles. The first purpose of treatment is to provide symptomatic relief for various painful spinal conditions. The second is to provide important diagnostic information to help in isolating specific causes of the pain.

If you have chronic spine pain that has not responded to conservative measures and you are not a surgical candidate, a Pain Medicine specialist may be your best option.
