Why is it harder for families living in rural communities to receive health care?
While 20% of Americans live in rural settings, only 9% of the nation’s physicians are dedicated to serving these areas. With fewer physicians practicing in rural areas, people often do not believe they can receive the health care they need because of poor access to the doctors, language barriers, location of the physician and financial difficulties.
What should someone look for when choosing a rural provider?
There are several things a patient should look for when choosing a rural physician:
- The use of an electronic medical record
- Being part of a larger multi-specialty group
- Hours of operation
- Provider access
Why is this criteria important?
When rural providers are part of a larger multi-specialty group and utilize an Electronic Medical Record (EMR), they are able to work better as a team when caring for patients. Because all information is stored electronically, the EMR allows us the ability to consult with a specialist while the patient is still in the office. And, to limit travel time for patients, many of the Clarian Arnett Health specialists visit rural sites to see patients.
It is also important to choose a rural care provider that understands the need for better access and not so normal business hours. Rural providers understand that the normal 8 – 5 day isn’t normal for farmers and shift workers, so ideal offices will make it a point to be available when patients need us, offering extended hours and walk-in appointments.
Clarian Arnett Health has 15 providers at 6 rural care sites.
