What is Restless Legs Syndrome?
Restless Legs Syndrome, or RLS, is a neurological disorder that affects around 12 million Americans. People with RLS have strange sensations in their legs and an irresistible urge to move their legs to relieve the sensations. The sensations are usually worse at rest, especially when lying in bed.

What symptoms are associated with RLS?
The most distinctive aspect of RLS is that lying down and trying to relax activates the symptoms. The symptoms are generally worse in the evening and night and less severe in the morning. Symptoms can cause severe nightly sleep disruption that can significantly impair a person's quality of life.

RLS is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed. Symptoms associated with RLS include:

  • An irritating sensation in legs
  • An overwhelming urge to move and
  • Visible movements in toes or feet

RLS sensations are often described as burning, creeping, tugging or like insects crawling inside the legs. The symptoms vary in severity from uncomfortable to painful.

When should I see a doctor?
You should see a doctor if your symptoms are keeping you up at night or are affecting you every day activities.
