What are the baby blues?
Following delivery of their baby many new mothers suffer from blues or depression. Postpartum blues typically occur within 2 – 3 days of delivery and last up to 2 weeks. Baby blues are caused by major changes in several hormone levels after delivery.
- Baby blues can cause new mothers to experience:
- Mild, rapid mood swings from elation to sadness
- Irritability
- Anxiety
- Decreased concentration
- Insomnia
- Tearfulness and crying spells
What is postpartum depression?
For some, the baby blues can turn into a more serious condition call postpartum depression. Postpartum depression occurs in the first 4 weeks after delivery and symptoms include:
- Inability to sleep
- Loss of appetite
- Lack of energy
- Weight loss
- Irritability
- Anger
- Feeling overwhelmed and unable to care or bond with baby
It is important to distinguish symptoms of depression from the expected decreased energy and loss of sleep due to caring for a newborn.
What can be done to help someone with postpartum depression?
Postpartum depression can have a major impact on the entire family. Recognizing the symptoms and early treatment can improve the quality of life during this stressful yet wonderful time of life.
