Why is it important to keep our kids active, especially during the summer vacation?
With all the extra free-time that comes with summer vacation, it is very important to keep kids active. Summertime is the perfect time to focus on increasing physical activity and practicing healthy habits.
With childhood obesity rates rising in America, it’s important to make sure that your children are getting enough physical activity to keep them healthy.
How do I get my kids active?
While some kids love competitive sports or camping, others may be more interested in free play such as tag or kite flying.
The best way to encourage your kids to get active is to find out what interests them. Once you know what they are interested in, it’ll be easier to get them active. Also, being active as a family teaches kids that it’s important to be active throughout life.
There are many non-sports related activities that can get kids moving this summer.
Some ideas for kids 3 to 5 include:
- Playing hopscotch
- Playing pirates or cowboys
- Bouncing a ball
- Walking the dog
- Playing follow the leader
- Playing musical chairs
- Dancing
And for kids 6 to 12 include:
- Swimming
- Participating in martial arts
- Gymnastics
- Dancing
- Biking
- Playing tag
- Doing chores such as washing the car or mowing the lawn
Whichever activities your children choose to engage in this summer, make sure you and your kids are enjoying yourselves. Remember, the easiest way to get kids active and into sports is to find something they like and make it fun.
