What are hemorrhoids?
We’ve all heard horror stories about hemorrhoids. Such stories are one of the main reasons why so many people with hemorrhoids keep quiet about their conditions and try to manage symptoms on their own.
Hemorrhoids are merely swollen veins. Normally, tissue surrounding the inside of the anus fills with blood to help control bowel movements. Hemorrhoids develop when excessive pressure or other factors cause the veins within these cushions to swell and stretch. The affected tissue may, at times, extend outside the body; this is called prolapse, and is a sign of an advanced stage of hemorrhoids.
What are some of the symptoms?
National statistics suggest that more than half the population will develop symptomatic hemorrhoids at some point in their lives. Hemorrhoid symptoms include:
- Itching
- Pain
- Swelling
- Cracking
- Bleeding
- Sensitive Lumps
Are there other treatments for hemorrhoids when over-the-counter remedies don’t work?
When over-the-counter medications and treatments for hemorrhoids no longer are effective, surgery may be needed.
A new technique called Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids, or PPH, is more convenient and less painful than traditional procedures. PPH essentially lifts up the hemorrhoidal tissue and places it back where it belongs. This results in shrinkage of internal and external hemorrhoids, typically within 4 to 6 weeks.
The procedure can be done at the Arnett Surgery Center and is performed under anesthesia typically lasting about 30 to 45 minutes. Patients are able to return home the same day.
If you have concerns about hemorrhoids, please talk with your doctor.
