What is genetic testing?
Genetic testing is one tool used in the fight against cancer. A simple blood test can determine if a patient is at a higher risk of developing a hereditary cancer.

What is hereditary cancer?
Hereditary cancers are the result of a mutation to specific genes that can be inherited from either parent. Currently, genetic testing can be done for the following hereditary cancers:

  • Breast Cancer
  • Ovarian Cancer Syndrome
  • Colorectal Cancer

What is involved in genetic testing?
A simple blood test can determine a patient’s risk of developing a hereditary cancer. Results include:

Positive: There is a greater risk of developing a hereditary cancer. Your doctor will work with you concerning cancer prevention.

Negative: There is no risk of developing a hereditary cancer.

Uncertain Significance:
A gene mutation was found, however it is not specific to hereditary cancers. Your doctor will work with you concerning cancer prevention.

What are the benefits to genetic testing?
The benefits and limitations of genetic testing, include:

  • Know your risk of developing cancer
  • Appropriate medical management to help reduce cancer risk
  • Important information for family members
  • Reduces anxiety and stress

Unfortunately, genetic testing cannot predict all cancers.

Talk with your doctor to see if genetic testing is an option for you.
