Ask the Expert

How is weight really lost?
Losing weight depends on balancing the calories you consume with the calories you burn each day. If you are able to eliminate an extra snack or switch to a lighter latte a day and increase your activity, this could result in a healthy weight loss of ½ to 2 pounds per week.

How quickly should new eating habits be made to be a successful lifestyle change?
New eating habits should be made one step at a time. Make small goals such as trying to cook at home four times a week or adding 10 minutes of physical activity to your day. Remember, it took time to develop your current eating habits, that’s why making small changes will help move you and keep you moving in the right direction.

What isn’t commonly known about the foods we eat?
Items that can add to your waistline include:

  • Just by switching from a large café mocha to a small, you will save 24.5g of fat and 320 calories.
  • A four-ounce bagel is equal to four slices of bread. Opt for a whole wheat bagel and only eat half.
  • Granola bars are often no better than candy bars. Some contain more than 200 calories and may be loaded with sugar. Choose granola bars that are low in fat and have less than 200 calories.
  • There are 100 calories in four ounces of regular applesauce versus 50 in the natural, unsweetened version.
  • Eat celery. It takes more calories to eat a piece of celery than the celery has in it.
