Ask the Expert

What are the most common types of sports related injuries?
Knee injuries are one of the most common problems in young athletes. Some sports related injuries result from a blow to the knee or sudden movements that strain the knee beyond its normal range of motion. This type of knee injury can affect important structures in the knee such as the ACL and the meniscus.

What is an ACL?
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament or ACL, is one of 4 major ligaments in the knee that is very important in keeping the knee stable. Each year in the US, over 250,000 people tear or rupture an ACL.

What happens when the ACL is injured?
With an ACL tear, the knee becomes loose and if untreated in an active athlete, can lead to further knee damage.

When should someone see a doctor?
It is important to know when a knee injury needs prompt medical attention. If your athlete has a twisting injury and hears a “pop” it could be a serious injury. If the knee swells immediately, you should ice and elevate it, and see your doctor within one to two days. If your athlete can not bear weight on the knee, you should see your doctor immediately.

How is an ACL tear treated?
ACL reconstruction surgery is necessary if the ligament is torn. A torn ACL must be entirely removed, and a new one reconstructed using other, healthy tissue. Approximately 90% of patients with a torn ACL return to their previous level of activity, after healing time and therapy.

How can you prevent ACL injuries?
The best way to prevent an ACL injury is to stretch and strengthen the leg muscles, especially the front and back muscles of the thigh (quadriceps and hamstrings).
